We may agree with jury verdict or not, yet the Chopin Competition remains the most important music event in Poland. Therefore, presentation of the laureates, known to the majority of the public from nothing more but broadcasts of their auditions, is a basic duty of music institutions. As usually, NOSPR reaches for the top: this season, part of the prize for the laureates of the highest places is a performance on the Katowice stage.
This is more than a show of pianists beaming with their competition triumph. The laureates of the Competition are an indicator of contemporary sensitivity. What is this group of pianistics luminaries’ view on the art, including interpretation of Chopin’s music – most lyrical, dramatic, sometimes tragic, but never failing to reach the listeners’ feeling? What form of the art do they want to impose on the pianists working in the years to come, promoting it in the present generation? It is one we do not have to agree with, but it is also one we must learn about.
