Haydn and Beethoven. The Viennese classics in works joined with the theme of the Passion.

Symphony No. 49 in F minor ("La passione") is one of Haydn’s most dramatic symphonies. Composed in 1768, today it is considered a flagship example of the Sturm und Drang style. It is Haydn saturated with dark timbres, moving, astonishing with the precision of the orchestra.
Beethoven’s only oratorio transports us into the world of... opera. The narrative of one of the few sacred music pieces produced by this composer, based on free paraphrase of the Gospels penned by Franz Xaver Huber, is focused on Jesus’ prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane until the moment he is arrested. The story takes place in between three characters. Jesus (tenor), Peter (bass) and the Seraph (soprano).
For many years, performances from historical instruments orchestras have been lending new timbres and meanings to Haydn’s and Beethoven’s works, both the well-known and the unjustly forgotten ones. Philippe Herreweghe and his Orchestre des Champs-Élysées are classics of stylish interpretations. A must.
