Partenope, HWV 27 (semi-stage version)

Partenope, the mythical founder and queen of Naples, is choosing her husband. Three candidates are flexing their muscles, even reaching for their weapons. Disguised as a man, Rosmira, the princess of Cyprus, is looking for an unfaithful fiancé, who proves to be one of the above. To make it funnier, she challenges him to a duel, but she needs to uncover her chest...

A masterpiece of baroque theatre. Full of wit and tongue-in-cheek sex appeal, sometimes called Handel’s Twelfth Night. The composer, in command of a new singers’ band freshly arrived from Italy, offers a tour de force sparkling with imagination and a taste of Italian style. Additionally, he allows himself to be led by his fantasy, humour, and playfulness. The recitatives are beautifully ‘talkative’, while the arias exude virtuosity and melodiousness. One can feel the chemistry of love in the air, particularly when the stage is taken by the legendary early music ensemble Les Arts Florissants and Le Jardin des Voix, an ensemble multiple young solo singers emerge from.
