Chamber music aficionados sometimes refer to piano trios with disrespect. In the period of classicism they were written with melomaniacs from the upper echelons of society in mind, and hence they were sometimes called ‘women’s chamber music’. However, the blending of the classical discipline of form with the Romantic ardour also resulted in the creation of such gems as Mendelssohn’s famous 1839 Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor. Philipp Scharwenka, born in Szamotuły, a cosmopolitan composer and brother of Xaver, a little more known in Poland, took on a similar challenge in 1902. He composed his Piano Trio in G major under significant influence of music by Franck, Liszt and Brahms, yet maintaining a gusto of narration and precision of the musical gesture typical for Mendelssohn.
