The programme of today’s concert is permeated with a mood of horror and grief. The second movement of Beethoven’s String Quartet in F major was inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet tragedy, and particularly the scene in the crypt, with Romeo drinking poison at the sight of the apparently dead Juliet. A discussion of the Piano Quartet – Mahler’s only surviving chamber piece – plays a significant part in the Shutter Island thriller, set in a hospital for mentally ill criminals. Schnittke’s gloomy Piano Quintet is an homage to two deceased persons: the composer’s mother and Shostakovich, whom he admired. Tonight, we are going to hear lamentations from the living and sounds from strings struck by the dead – a musical communion of saints.
