Introduction and Allegro, Op. 47

The seductive, expressive and sometimes disquieting sound of bowed instruments has been most clearly associated with the human voice for centuries. They learnt to sing in a full varied choir as early as in Renaissance consorts. It was only Monteverdi, however, who precisely designed their place in the orchestra, letting two violins and fifteen viols shine in his Orpheus. The contemporary quintet began to take shape in the late Baroque period and found its final form in that of Romanticism. It was also then that it gained independence, giving rise to the separate ensemble of string orchestra. Today, it will be in this very form that NOSPR will give Bach’s Baroque concerto a new look, show the entirety of its sonic capabilities in Elgar’s and Britten’s compositions, as well as surprise you with the unusual combination of solo violin, the harp, and a small strings orchestra in Schönberg’s Notturno.
