Aleksander Nowak’s opera ahat-ilī – sister of the gods (2018) to a libretto by Olga Tokarczuk (based on her novel Anna In in the Tombs of the World) re-tells one of the oldest myths: the story of the descent/trip to the underworld, the battle fought there, and the consequences of these events. The protagonists of the story are divine, human and demonic figures governed by various mysterious forces, intertwined in a web of fatal relationships. The main character is, contrary to the original Akkadian myth, not a god but a man trying to find his place in the world ruled by gods, to understand this world and save it from the catastrophe the gods have prepared.  The end of the world will not come, but it is man who must make the ultimate sacrifice to preserve the divine order.
